IMPEACHMENT: Making the idea stick

We need to get the idea of impeachment out into the world. People need to see the word, not just hera Fox news spin it away. The president admitted yesterday and over the wekeend to an impeachable offense: spying on Americans without any clearance whatsoever, in spite of the fact that FISA clearance is easy to get.

It is time for him to go. We have had enough.

Here is what to do (and thanks to Kagro X on Daily KOS and The Last Hurrah for this idea);

(see his post, with links at: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/12/19/17374/325#332)

Print a sign on your computer with the word IMPEACH on it. Upsize the font as big as you can. print it out.

Put it on your door, on a vending machine, anywhere people will see it. Put it on your backpack as you walk to work.

This is a national action taking place all over the US today.

Religion in the Ithaca Public Schools

Please take ten minutes to write letter to the ICDS school board (and any educators you know). Their e-mails are below in the letter. It can be short and sweet. If you have kids in the schools, also e-mail your principal.

Dear Friends:

I have been working, quietly, to educate the school board about the faith-based initiatives curricula that are being presented in our public schools. They are really starting to get the picture, but want to hear from people. They are, after all, elected.

Here are some basic facts:

1. Abstinence ONLY education, in the form of a program called Worth the Wait is now presenting in the Dewitt Middle Schools. They are getting three days with each class. They give out abstinence bracelets (also called, by the religious right "chastity bracelets." I got a bracelet from my son and have it. It says "You are Worth the Wait.") We also bussed kids, at taxpayer expense, to a TEEN SUMMIT in Owego where they played games about STDs, but were not told how to prevent them. The abstinence only presenters, according to the Abstinence Initiative which funded them, are forbidden to mention contraception, condoms, homosexuality or abortion. They are federally funded through what is called the "Federal Abstinence Initiative." This comes out of the Texas GOP platform, which became the national GOP platform. Much of that federal money goes to faith-based programs, many from the religious right and evangelical groups.

2. Camfel Productions, an evangelical faith based educational company presented a sound and lights show called "Be the Change." The interns who travel the country with Camfel are getting, in many cases, missionary credit with their bible colleges to do the work. On their website, they indicate that Camfel does both character development in schools and also programs for churches. Their program is relatively content-free, but is sound and lights telling kids to be the change, and then showing kids holding signs saying "Support OUR Troops" and some military people. One teacher said it reminded her of "Triumph of the Will." It is subtle propaganda at worst, and a waste of time at best.

The board is now aware of this. Decisions on what is included in the curriculum can not come from the board, but they can set guidelines about this issue of faith based curricula. We need to get this strong response to the school board in the very near future.

Please do this:

Write a letter to the school board. Let them know how you feel about using a curriculum with a gag order (no mention of contraception, condoms, gay and lesbian relationships, or abortion as a legal option in unwanted pregnancy), presented by religious orgnizations, within our school district.

ACTION ALERT ON VOTING MACHINES

This urgent action alert is from our hero and champion of fair elections, Bo LIpari:
The NYS Board of Elections will commence testing of computerized voting
machines (DREs) this week, even though these DREs still have no voter
verified paper ballot as required by New York law. This is outrageous. It is
meaningless to test a partial system, and the Board is disregarding its
publicly announced process of finalizing of voting system standards after a
45 day public comment period.

That the Board is beginning to test incomplete systems bodes poorly for the
need for a robust, thorough and transparent set of machine certification
tests fully available for public review.

The NYS Board of Elections has consistently misrepresented the voting
machine selection process to the public, and continues to operate in near
secrecy despite a tremendous outcry from citizens for full visibility and
transparency. This is unacceptable. It is indefensible to cut corners and be
secretive and unaccountable when our democracy is at stake.

Take Action Today! Call, email, write and fax:

1) Tell the NYS Board of Elections that they need to stop the certification
testing of machines which don't meet New York State Election Law
requirements, and that the public wants full visibility and disclosure of
the machine testing and certification process.

2) Call your New York State Legislators and tell them they must convene
oversight hearings on the Board of Election's secretive actions.

Let the Board and your Legislators know that these are our elections, and we
demand the highest standards of testing and a certification process that is
thorough, robust, and fully open to the public.

You'll find contact information for the NYS Board and Legislators below, and
more materials on our website:

Please take action today.
